Last weekend was Grimsby’s Doors Open. It was the first year of the event and they had 16 sites open. The pictures above are from my favrouite site of the weekend, possibly the whole Doors Open Season.

The colourful houses are located in the Historic Grimsby Beach. The area started as a site for an Methodist Temperance Rally in 1846, which quickly became a camp with tents and then in the 1870s the cottages that are still standing. In 1909 the grounds were sold and turned into an amusement park.

It was one of my favourite sites because it was a large area to walk and they had tons of historic photos out at the meeting hall. The intricate wood details on the houses the added whimsical touches such as lanterns, flowers, nodical references where great to photograph. The colour were so cheerful that I couldn’t help by smile. Its a great example of where non-heritage colours really add to the character of the place.

I just came across your comment about Doors Open last year Kayla – Thank you for the positive feedback. We have just signed up to do Doors Open Grimsby again in 2011 on Saturday, September 22, complete with the Tolley and will be featuring the Grimsby Beach site again – hopefully with a few more cottages. Best wishes. Michael
